What is RX Compounding?

Pharmacists have compounded medication since the profession began. Special flavorings, unique dosage forms, innovative delivery methods - using these tools and more, compounding pharmacists work with prescribers to fill a gap through customized solutions for specific patients.

Why would I want/need to have my prescription compound?

It all starts with a problem. If you need a specific medication, dosage form, or strength that is not commercially available then a compounded medication may solve that problem.

A child who can’t swallow pills, a patient with a gluten allergy, the much-needed drug that’s in short supply. For whatever reason, mass-produced medication simply doesn’t work for everyone.

Why can't my regular pharmacy compound my prescription?

Although compounding has been a component of the practice of our pharmacy for many years, it does take state-of-the-art equipment, chemicals and advanced techniques to ensure quality products. Other pharmacies may not have the time, equipment, chemicals or expertise to "custom-make" your prescription.A child who can’t swallow pills, a patient with a gluten allergy, the much-needed drug that’s in short supply. It is certainly no fun to be sick and taking medication can make the situation even worse. While there’s no guarantee that taking medicine will ever become an entirely pleasurable event, there are some ways to help. One of the best involves custom compounded medication and custom flavoring.

  • Pain Management

Pain can keep you from loving YOUR life... but it doesn’t have to. Everyone experiences some sort of pain in their lives. It can take the form of a stress-induced headache, a muscle group strained from sports activities, be the result of an injury, or chronic arthritic pain. Pain is the most common symptom for which individuals seek medical help.

Many commonly prescribed, commercially available pain relief medications help the symptoms associated with chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, nerve pain, and headaches, but can cause unwanted side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness or stomach irritation. Many patients taking these medications come to accept these conditions, but struggling through chronic pain or the side effects of pain medication does not have to be a daily activity.

Pharmacy compounding can provide alternate methods of delivery to make the process easier. Instead of a capsule or tablet, pain medications often can be compounded as dosage forms such as a topical gel, cream or spray form that can be applied directly to the site of the pain and absorbed through the skin. Additionally, a flavored lozenge, nasal spray, or suppository can be used to deliver pain management.

Every individual is unique, and the types of pain experienced can be equally diverse. Compounded pain management may help improve your quality of life by providing relief with potentially fewer side effects and less overall medication. Contact us to see how we can help.

  • Wound

Wound care applications can be critical to the quality of life for a patient. In many cases, the ability  to heal a wound prevents the unnecessary amputation of a limb or part of a limb. Helping a patient improve wound healing brings enormous satisfaction.

Schwieterman Pharmacy and Compounding Center knows that skin wounds such as pressure sores and skin ulcers are a common health concerns. That’s why we offer custom compounding solutions to patients with hard-to-heal wounds. Pressure sores are a result of prolonged pressure over bony body prominences which cause depleted blood supply and poor tissue nutrition. Skin ulcers can occur in diabetic patients. The ulcers are the results of a combination of nerve damage and impaired blood circulation which are frequent chronic conditions associated with diabetes. Age, weight, and nutrition are just a few of the factors that determine whether you may develop a skin wound and how long it may take to heal.

We offer custom-compounded medications that can be applied to the wound. These medications are designed to stimulate new tissue growth, reduce pain, increase circulation to the area, and discourage bacterial overgrowth. Schwieterman Pharmacy and Compounding Center can prepare products in different combinations and different dosage forms to best fit the patient’s condition. Whether you suffer from a skin wound, would like to prevent one, or merely wish to improve circulation to an area, we urge you to contact us. • Scar and Stretch Mark Therapy

One of the main components of normal skin is collagen protein. Scar tissue is made from the same types of protein, however the composition of those proteins causes a different appearance. Often the scar has a raised appearance, the skin texture is smoother, and does not contain sweat glands or hair follicles. These factors can lead to continuous skin irritation. A treatment regimen that begins as the scar is forming and continues for many months is the best method for reducing scar tissue.

Our compounded scar formulations are an ideal choice for use on all types of scar tissue, including new scars, old scars, surgical scars, keloids, and stretch marks. We use a proprietary base infused with unique ingredients and manufactured with advanced technology giving it potential healing and soothing power, emolliency and mild penetration. When combined with active pharmaceutical ingredients this base helps increase natural skin renewal and resurfacing.

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy - Women

Hormones can have a powerful impact on your body. They can influence everything from metabolism to mood to sexual and reproductive function. Estrogen alone has over 300 functions in the body. When your hormones are deficient or out of balance, your entire body and its functions are also not working efficiently and effectively. Menopause and a variety of other factors can offset your hormones, making you feel off balance and out of tune.

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is an innovative, highly effective means of restoring balance, so you can begin to feel like yourself again. We believe that the goal of hormone replacement therapy should be to provide an adequate supply of the deficient hormone in a form that is as close as possible to that which the body originally produced. Every person is unique. Therefore, it is a sensible approach to work together to provide, by prescription, customized hormone replacement therapy.

BHRT is often prescribed to ease uncomfortable symptoms of menopause, but this specialized type of therapy has also been used to address a variety of conditions experienced by women, including:

    • Decreased libido
    • Endometriosis
    • Fibrocystic breasts
    • Hot flashes
    • Infertility
    • Moodiness
    • Night sweats
    • Painful intercourse
    • Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
    • Sleep disturbances
    • Vaginal dryness
    • Weight gain

Millions of women are affected by these conditions, which impact their lives and decrease their quality of life. Together with your healthcare practitioner, we can develop a hormone replacement therapy specific for you!

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy - Men

At Schwieterman Pharmacy and Compounding Center we know that women are not the only ones to experience “change of life”. Men can benefit from compounded hormone replacement therapy as well. Men experience a gradual loss of hormones as they age, which can make daily life seem like an uphill battle. Testosterone production peaks during adolescence and early adulthood, but declines with age, typically 1% per year after age 30. Decreased levels of testosterone and increased levels of estrogen can cause symptoms of imbalance or deficiency.

Through research, medical experts have identified many common physical and emotional symptoms that men experience as they age. These may include:

    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Decreased libido
    • Decreased muscle mass
    • Heart disease
    • Erective dysfunction
    • Loss of energy and zest for life
    • Osteoporosis
    • Sleep disorders

By working with you and your healthcare practitioner hormonal imbalances or deficiencies can be addressed. We strive to bring back the healthier younger person you know is still inside! For more information please visit us at www.SchwietermansHormoneHaven.com.

Thyroid hormone deficiency and adrenal fatigue can also have an impact on your feeling of wellbeing. Symptoms of hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormone) include fatigue, cold and heat intolerance, constipation, headache, low libido, weight gain, and more. More than half of all people with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition.

Although both T4 and T3(the active form of thyroid hormone) are secreted by the normal thyroid gland, many hypothyroid patients are treated only with levothyroxine (synthetic T4). Some hypothyroid patients remain symptomatic, and T3 may also be required for optimal thyroid replacement therapy. Please visit us at www.SchwietermansHormoneHaven.com for more information.

The adrenal glands secrete hormones such as cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone that are essential to health and vitality and significantly affect total body function. Intense or prolonged physical or emotional stress commonly associated with modern lifestyles or chronic illnesses can lead to Adrenal Fatigue.

Proper adrenal support is essential to complete the hormonal pathway to optimal health, and includes proper nutrition, getting plenty of sleep, regular moderate exercise, stress management, and possible replacement of deficient hormones.
