Lake Campus dean chosen

By Betty Lawrence
Wright State University-Lake Campus Interim Dean Bonnie Mathies has been tapped to be the new dean, effective May 1.
Mathies, 68, first served as associate dean at the Lake Campus in 2007 and then became interim dean in June 2010 when dean Jim Sayer retired.
She retired from Wright State University, Dayton, in June 2007 as a professor and associate dean of the College of Education, Human Services. Her retirement proved to be short lived when less that six months later, she accepted the position of associate dean at the Lake Campus.
Mathies brings with her more than 40 years experience as an educator, having served 10 years as a public school teacher in Toledo before coming to Wright State University, Dayton, in 1974. She has held numerous positions at the Dayton campus over the years.
"I am so excited and enthused and look forward to serving the Lake Campus," Mathies said this morning. "There's so much going on right now at the Lake Campus. We're currently involved in going from quarters to semesters, which will happen this fall, and we're all working hard to make sure this is in place, in concert with the Dayton campus."
She said she is looking at the Lake Campus programs and degrees that are available and what needs to be refreshed and renewed.
"I want to move our curriculum and academic programs forward in a positive manner," she said.
There are many signs of growth at the Lake Campus, Mathies said, such as the renovation of the Lake Campus' kitchen, cafeteria and rec areas and the on-site student housing.
"There's great things happening here, and I am working with a really outstanding faculty staff that is experienced and enthusiastic. Serving as dean will be a great opportunity for me," she added.
Bonnie and her husband share their time between Celina and Dayton residences. The couple have two sons and three grandsons.
Mathies was appointed to the position of dean. A search for a new dean was conducted last year and four finalists were named, but none were chosen for the position.
