Goose on the loose
Photo by Nancy Allen/The Daily Standard

The goose at right has been hanging around Grand Lake on West Bank Road. It appears to be a domestic breed called a Pilgrim, though it may be a cross between a Pilgrim and a wild Canada goose, says Fort Recovery resident Annette Schmitt, whose family raises domestic waterfowl. The goose's slimmer build, longer neck and gray-colored bill may suggest interbreeding with a Canada goose, she said. Typically, Pilgrims have a bright orange bill and feet and a blockier build. Mercer County Wildlife Officer Ryan Garrison discounts that the bird is a domestic wild goose hybrid, but rather a pet that left someone's yard or was left at the lake.
