St. Marys city firefighters coordinate efforts at a house fire at 409 S. Vine Street on Friday evening. Fire Capt. Randy Tomberlin said the single-story home sustained heavy fire damage to a front bedroom, where the fire is believed to have started, and living room, as well as smoke damage throughout the dwelling. The cause of the fire and a damage amount were unavailable at press time today. The home is insured by its owner, Nick W. Schmidt of St. Marys, however, the occupants who rented the residence and escaped the burning building did not carry insurance and lost many possessions in the fire, Tomberlin said. They are being assisted by the Auglaize County chapter of the American Red Cross. Twelve St. Marys firefighters were on the scene for a little more than an hour.
