Charlie Heinl of Maria Stein poses in front of the ship he served on in World War II, the USS Gambier Bay. Heinl survived the sinking of the Gambier Bay after it was struck by Japanese naval fire. Two hours later and just miles away, the USS Saint Lo was attacked, killing U.S. Navy seamen William Bettinger and Paul Buschur of Coldwater.
