08-12-03: St. Henry school board will seek 9.75 mill levy in fall

ST. HENRY - School district voters will see a five-year, 9.75-mill emergency levy on the ballot Nov. 4 as St. Henry Consolidated Local Schools joins the majority of area school districts returning to the polls after state budget cuts in July.
The levy includes a renewal of the present 7.1-mill levy, which generates an annual $490,000 and will expire this year. The additional 2.65 mills will generate another $240,000 for a total of $730,000 per year for the next five years.
Mercer County Auditor Mark Giesige attended Monday night's board meeting and completed the necessary paperwork, which gave the board the go-ahead for the November election.
Board members are hoping the millage of the new levy, if it passes, will be able to be reduced by 0.25 mills after new property valuations are completed in November.
A higher valuation will allow the board to reduce the millage by 0.25 mills and still collect the same amount of money from taxpayers.
Although the board agenda included a vote to approve the 0.25 mill reduction on the bond retirement fund, Giesige explained board action could not take place until after November when he would be able to certify tax calculations.
"I see no reason why (the 0.25 reduction) could not come about and, if I were a betting man, I'd bet it would. But I can't certify it until November. However, you can express your intent to reduce," Giesige said.
In other action, the board approved various supplemental personnel, a tuition rate of a  $1,856.89 per student as determined by the state department of education, bus route schedules, as well as extended time contracts for selected personnel.
Board member Joan Buschur requested several items be pulled from the agenda for further consideration including approval of new salary schedule for administrators, which was to take effect Aug. 1. Following executive session, the board elected to table the salary schedule item until the next board meeting.
