08-27-03: Coldwater freshman takes Mercer Co. title

By MARC TOBIAS

The Mercer County Cross Country meet experienced some bad weather as much of the area did yesterday, and the girls portion of the race was not able to be run.
The girls race was suspended, but will be made up tomorrow at Eastview Park at 4:30 p.m.
The boys did get their race finished, as they ran in humid 80-degree temperatures. The warm weather apparently didn’t bother Coldwater freshman David Wilker though, as he was able to lead his Coldwater squad to victory.
Coldwater won with a team score of 31 points, while Wilker was the overall winner with a time of 17:44.
“I’m happy, but we’ve worked hard,” Wilker said. “Going in as a freshman you don’t really know what to expect, because you’re adding an extra mile.”
Wilker said coming into the county meet he was fighting to win the top spot.
“I was thinking about it, because I just finished fifth at Milton Union, and I came in there knowing that Marty (Schoenherr) and Cory Winner and Ryan Winner from Marion (Local) were tough.”
Wilker had some solid support with him, as Cavalier teammate Ken Platfoot finished fourth overall with a time of 18:36. Schoenherr was fifth, and Jason Bruns was sixth.
Corey Winner from Marion Local finished second with a time of 17:59, helping his Flyers squad to a second-place finish that tied with Celina.
“I was pleased, it wasn’t my best time, but I guess there’s more season ahead of me to look forward to,” Winner said. “This is a little faster than what I started out last year, so I guess I’m improving.”
Winner and Wilker were the only two runners to break 18 minutes.
Celina and Marion Local were deadlocked in second as both squads finished with 68 points. Fort Recovery followed those two with a team score of 72 points, with St. Henry next with 107 points.
Jason Groff from Fort Recovery finished third overall with a time of 18:34.
Rounding out the top 10 were the Flyers Ryan Winner in seventh, Ryan Bellman and Shaun Fent from Celina in eighth and ninth, and Derrick Huelskamp from Fort Recovery in 10th.
From 11-20 were St. Henry’s Troy Rindler, Fort Recovery’s Mitch Fullenkamp, Marion Local’s Alan Broering, St. Henry’s Tony Hess, Coldwater’s Craig Kaiser, Celina’s Philip Denning, Shawn Caruso and and Chris Johnson, Coldwater’s Kyle Homan and finally Celina’s Nathan Hanna.
