Leander Bergman Leander H. Bergman, 89, 7616 North Star-Fort Loramie Road, Yorkshire, died at 10:05 a.m. Sept. 4, 2004, at Heritage Manor Nursing Center, Minster. He was born March 23, 1915, in Osgood, to George and Rosa Heitkamp Bergman. On June 10, 1939, he married Marie V. Wente who died May 16, 1985. Surviving are three sons, Ernest (Marlene) of Yorkshire, Greg (Elaine) of Versailles, and Carl (Roslyn) of Cincinnati; three daughters, Thelma of Lexington, Ky., Mary Ann of Miamisburg, and Diana (Larry) McClurg, Tipp City; a son-in-law, Wilbert Mescher, Anna; a daughter-in-law, Karen of Yorkshire; a sister, Romilda (Cyril) Siefring, New Weston; 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, Donald; a daughter, Carol Mescher; a brother and a sister. He was a retired farmer and Pioneer seed dealer. He formerly served on the Marion Local School board of education for 18 years and was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and the Men's Sodality, both of Osgood. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, the Rev. David Zink officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Freda M. Burch, 78, 9870 Rice Road, Celina, died at 7:47 p.m. Sept. 5, 2004, of injuries sustained in a traffic accident at the intersection of Rice Road and U.S. 33. (See story on Page One.) She was born March 30, 1926, in St. Marys, to Enos and Flora Anna Weber Place. On July 15, 1944, she married Carl D. Burch who died Feb. 16, 1990. Surviving are a son, Jim F. of Celina; three daughters, Carol (Scott) Miller and Wanda Huey, all of Lima, and Donna (Hank) Hembree, Mendon; a sister-in-law, Ann Hedgecocke, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Deceased are five sisters, Daisy Brown, Mamie Miller, Lillie Alexander, Floraetta Browder and Helen Miller; four brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law and two great-grandchildren. A retired employee of Huffy's in Celina, also had worked at Mari-Stan in Mendon and Celina Steam Laundry. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Mendon. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Peter Calvert officiating. Burial will follow at Swamp College Cemetery. Renee J. Homan, 14, 6919 Olding Road, Maria Stein, was pronounced dead on arrival at 12:26 a.m. Sept. 6, 2004, at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Death was due to injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident near her home. (See story on Page One.) She was born March 10, 1990, in Coldwater, to Roger and Deborah Siefring Homan. They survive. Also surviving are two brothers, Brian of Pennville, Ind., and Eric of Maria Stein; a sister, Julia, also of Maria Stein; and the grandparents, Dennis and Louise Homan, Maria Stein, and Cyril and Romilda Siefring, New Weston. She was a freshman at Marion Local High School in Maria Stein and a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church. Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Maria Stein, the Rev. Ken Schroeder officiating. Burial will follow at St. Rose Cemetery. Edward C. Kahlig, 65, 4106 state Route 219, Coldwater, died at 8 p.m. Sept. 4, 2004, at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. Death was due to cancer. He was born March 24, 1939, in Coldwater, to Charles and Bernadine Post Kahlig. On April 24, 1960, he married Delores Knapke and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Fred (Renee) of Coldwater; a daughter, Donna (Keith) Harvey, Springboro; three brothers, Ray and George, both of Coldwater, and Greg (Edna) of Fort Recovery; three sisters, Kathryn Bruggeman and Mary (Barney) Siefring, both of Coldwater, and Margaret (Mark) Klosterman, Chickasaw; a brother-in-law, Howard Huwer, British Columbia; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kahlig, Coldwater; and five grandchildren. Deceased are two sons, Chris and Dennis; a daughter, Tonya; a brother, Ralph; and a sister, Irene Huwer. He was a farmer and operator of Kahlig Farm Drainage. A former Butler Township trustee, he had served of the boards of Mercer County Community Hospital, Coldwater, and the Soil and Water Conservation. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where he had served as an usher, Knights of Columbus Council 1991 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3025, all of Coldwater. The Rev. James R. Sager, 57, 209 Eastview Drive, Coldwater, died at 4:35 a.m. Sept. 4, 2004, at Grandview Hospital, Dayton. Death was due to an apparent heart attack. He was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Lancaster, to Chester J. and Anna Francis Spangler Sager. On May 15, 1972, he married Pamela Sue DeLong who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Brian (Robin) and Brent, all of Ashland, Ky., Jereme (Amy) of Wapakoneta, and James II of Montezuma; two brother, Terry (Sandy) of Arkansas, and Paul of Columbus; and six grandchildren. A Methodist minister for 28 years, he had served as pastor at Coldwater United Methodist Church. He previously served as pastor at Amanda United Methodist Church in Middletown, Salem United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta and White Cottage East Fulltonham United Methodist Church in Zanesville. He formerly worked as a disc jockey at K95 Radio in Lancaster and was a member of Coldwater Kiwanis Club. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Coldwater church, the Rev. Thad McGehee officiating. Beulah B. Staudt, 95, formerly of Montezuma, died at 1:15 a.m. Sept. 5, 2004, at Briarwood Manor Nursing Home, Coldwater. She was born Dec. 7, 1908, in Darke County, to Henry B. and Estella M. Shinkle Thomas. On Jan. 26, 1931, she married Leonard Staudt who died in 1948. Surviving are three daughters, Evelyn (Don) McMillian, Portland, Ind., Carolyn (Dallas) Emans, Celina, and Kay (Robert) Seeger, Coldwater; a daughter-in-law, Mildred Staudt, Meridian, Miss.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Deceased are a son, J.D., and two sisters, Ola Thomas and Norma Walters. She had been self-employed as a rug weaver for more than 40 years and was a member of Montezuma Church of Christ. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lehman Funeral Home, Celina, the Rev. Kevin Neuman officiating. Burial will follow at North Grove Cemetery. Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Hilda F. Walter, 88, formerly of 120 Morton St., Celina, died at 9:20 p.m. Sept. 5, 2004, at the Laurels of Shane Hill near Rockford. She was born Sept. 23, 1915, in Coldwater, to Edward and Agnes Rosengarten Borger. Her husband, Charles F. Walter, died June 13, 1965. Surviving are a son, Danny (Susie) of Celina; two daughters, Charlene Gillis, Coldwater, and Sharon (Jim) Fischer, Celina; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Smith, St. Marys, and Allis (Thomas) Real, Brookville; two sisters, Lou Ann (Chalmer) Ellis, Port Huron, Mich., and Alma (Roy) Thwaits, Orlando, Fla.; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and numerous stepgrandchildren. Deceased are three brothers, Edward, Edwin and Henry Borger, and a sister, Colette Brankamp. She retired from Ringle Plating and was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary, all of Celina.
