12-13-04 Area teams look good at invitationals

  Celina's swim and dive squad finished the day with a pair of top-three finishes. The WaterDog males finished third behind the host Wildcats and Lima Central Catholic while the Celina girls placed second behind Napoleon.

  Senior Kelly Mallory had a record-breaking day for the WaterDog boys. Mallory set meet records in the 50-yard and 100-yard free-style swims. Amanda Mallory won the 100 butterfly for the Celina girls and diver Eddie Craft easily won the one-meter diving competition.
  Coldwater finished sixth in the girls race and fourth in the boys. St. Henry placed 11th in the girls and 13th in the boys.
  Top finishers for Coldwater included Gina Harting placing third in the girls 50 free, Joe Otte taking fifth in the boys 50 free, Jodi Moorman taking fourth in girls diving and Dustin Schwieterman taking fourth in the boys butterfly.
  Debbie Lange of St. Henry placed second in the butterfly and fourth in the 200 freestyle.WRESTLING
MatDogs sweep tri-match
  Celina traveled to Toledo to take on St. John's and Tinora in a tri-match. The MatDogs defeated Tinora 49-24 then beat the hosts 49-21.
  Getting two pins on the day were Kyle Knouff at 152 pounds, Garrett Gray at 145 pounds and Nick Gray at 130 pounds.
  Going undefeated on the day were Sam Eshelman at 275 pounds, Andy Swain at 112, Trent Hellwarth at 189 and John Rhodes and Kiel Hawk, who split at 135 pounds with Rhodes winning twice.
  Celina has two league matches this week, with St. Marys coming to the Intermediate School on Tuesday and Kenton coming to town on Thursday.
Cavs make history at Lincolnview Invite
  Coldwater placed all 14 wrestlers in the top four for the first time in school history in any invitational in winning the Lincolnview Invitational on Saturday.
  The Cavaliers tallied 2891/2 points on the day. Ayersville was second with 202 with Covington third with 200.
  Winning championships on Saturday were Brian Uhlenhake -- who went to 10-0 in winning the 171-pound title -- and Kyle Uhlenhake at 189 pounds.
  Runner-up finishes went to Tyler Kunk at 160 and Adam Grieshop at 275. Third-place finishers were: Austin Abels (103), Jarred Kohn (112), Corey Knoth (119), Marty Hemmelgarn (135), Bryce Schlater (145), Andy Schmidt (152) and Kyle Oswalt (215). Fourth-place finishers were Kenny Platfoot (125), Alex Uhlenhake (130) and Ryan Muhlenkamp (140).
  Coldwater travels to the Waynesville Invitational on Saturday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Wildcats suffer first loss of season
  Minster may have beat Fort Loramie for a shot at the state title last season, but the Redskins got a little revenge on Saturday.
  Fort Loramie used a 13-4 third quarter to put enough of a cushion between themselves and Minster to get a 33-29 win over the defending Division IV state champs in a Saturday night game in Shelby County. Both teams stand at 5-1 after Minster sees its season-starting win streak come to a close.
  The Redskins got the lead at the start with an 8-3 run, but Minster came back to cut it to 16-15 at halftime. After falling back by 10 to start the fourth quarter, the Wildcat defense held Loramie to just four points. Minster scored 10 in the quarter but it wasn't enough.
  Courtney Reed led a balanced Redskins offense with 10. Mallory Albers added nine.
  Karen Brackman and Amy Kremer each scored 10 to lead the Wildcats.
  Minster travels to Fort Recovery for conference action on Thursday.

Indians fall to Redskins
  Fort Recovery's second-half surge against Wapakoneta was not enough as the Redskins's 34-13 halftime lead held up to a 60-52 win at Wapak High School on Saturday.
  The Indians tried to rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Redskins 24-8.
  Betsy Ruppert led the Redskins (5-1) with 15 points. Krissy Koester added 13 and Lindsey Kentner added 12.
  Megan Wenning led Fort Recovery (4-2) with nine.

Cavs rally past Kittens
  Kelly Obringer's clutch free throws with less than two seconds left helped put Coldwater back on the winning side of the ledger with a 44-43 win over Bath at Bath on Saturday.
  Obringer finished with 14 points to put the Cavaliers at 4-1. Kendra Robbins added 11 as the pair helped Coldwater outrebound the Wildkittens 35-21.
  Amy Simindinger led Bath (5-2) with 14 points.
  Coldwater hosts Versailles on Thursday.
  The Cavalier junior varsity won over Bath 35-28.

Bulldogs fall to Wave
  Celina dropped to 3-5 on the season with a 52-44 loss to Greenville on Saturday. The Green Wave improved to 4-2 with the win.
  Celina led 42-36 at the end of three quarters but was outscored 16-2 in the final period.
  Betsy Hone led Celina with 19 points while Liz Homan added 12.
  Celina returns to action on Tuesday when St. Henry comes to the Fieldhouse for a Mercer County battle.

  New Bremen slipped to 2-4 on the season with a 57-38 loss to 5-1 Jackson Center on Saturday.
  Sarah Schmiesing led the Cardinals with 10 points. Liz Schnelle and Kelly Long each added six.
  Makkine Huffer led the Tigers wih 24 points with Catie Halberstadt adding 15.
  New Bremen hosts St. Henry on Thursday.

Panthers fall to Trojans
  Parkway fell to 0-6 after a 46-26 loss at Botkins on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans improve to 2-5.
  Tiff Steinbrunner led Parkway with nine points. Addie Hays added eight.
  Parkway hosts Crestview on Tuesday then hosts New Knoxville on Thursday.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Bulldogs hold off Wave
  Celina picked up its second win of the season with a 42-37 win at Greenville on Saturday night. Celina improves to 2-3 with the win.
  The Bulldogs held a slim 29-26 lead at the end of three quarters and was able to add a little cushion in the final eight minutes with a 13-11 fourth quarter. The Bulldogs made six of their eight free throws in the fourth quarter and shot 75 percent (15-of-20) in the game.
  Brandon Wurster finished with 13 -- with 7-of-8 free throw shooting -- to lead the Bulldogs. Aaron Braun added 12 with Scott Luthman finishing with eight.
  Zac Fiely led Greenville with 17.
  Celina wraps up its pre-Christmas portion of the schedule on Friday with a WBL road trip to Shawnee.

Cavaliers get first win
  A night after having a long cold spell spanning the half, Coldwater rebounded by outscoring Wayne Trace 36-18 in the second half to post a 54-46 win over the Raiders in Paulding County. The Raiders suffer their first loss of the season.
  Craig Wellman led the Cavaliers with 14 points. Brent Robbins added 13.
  Coldwater scored just six points in the second half and trailed 28-18 at the break. The Cavaliers rebounded by outscoring Wayne Trace 18-11 in the third quarter and took the lead with a 18-7 fourth quarter.
  Blake Sinn led Wayne Trace (3-1) with 16 points.
  Coldwater travels to Versailles on Friday.

Cardinal jump to 3-0
  New Bremen staged an eight-point turnaround in the final quarter to beat Anna 74-70 in Shelby County on Saturday to stay unbeaten on the season at 3-0. The Rockets drop to 3-2.
  New Bremen trailed 55-51 at the end of three quarters and outscored the Rockets 23-15 in the final quarter to come away with the win.
  Scott Steineman led the Cardinals with 18 points. Marcus Overman added 11.
  New Bremen returns to action on Saturday when Fort Loramie comes to Cardinal Gymnasium.

Rangers drop to 1-4
  New Knoxville was outscored 19-8 at the start of Saturday's game against Spencerville and could not recover as the Bearcats improved to 3-1 with the 67-49 win at Ranger Gymnasium.
  Dustan Kruse paced the Rangers with 19 points with Kale Wierwille adding 14.
  Brent Cook paced the Bearcats with 23 points.
  New Knoxville hosts Parkway on Friday.
