Blooming into Easter

A1 / Shelley Grieshop
For the longest possible period of enjoyment from your Easter lily, follow these simple guidelines when purchasing the holiday plant:
Choose a lily with one or two open or partly open blooms and three or more "puffy" unopened buds of different sizes.
Make sure the foliage is a dark, rich green color, indicating a healthy plant. The foliage should appear dense and plentiful all the way down to the soil line.
Remove the yellow anthers inside the bloom before the pollen starts to shed. This gives longer flower life and prevents pollen from staining the white flowers, or worse, your carpet.
When mature blooms begin to whither, cut them off to make the plant more attractive.
Never over water; water your Easter lily at similar intervals to other house plants about every 5 to 7 days.
