The Grand Lake battle

A3 / Janie Southard

It could be called a food fight over the lake, but it's actually a contest between Celina and St. Marys high schools to see who collects the most canned goods to fill up local food pantries. The contest ends today and the winning school will enhance its trophy case with a gallon jar of gray water from the depths of Grand Lake. When photographed, the St. Marys students claimed they have the biggest cans. But Celina kids say they can kick those big cans! -- or something like that. (Keep this a secret but the newspaper photographer has reported that St. Marys offered their students some yummy incentives -- freshly baked doughnuts!!!) The Friday morning count, according to a St. Marys spokesperson, was St. Marys, 1086, and Celina, 886. (There's a lot to be said for a tasty doughnut.) At left, in St. Marys: Scott Laman, Billy Krugh, Jill Anderson, Donna Rhodes; in front, Brooke Fortman and Liz Barton. Celina, at right: Lindsay Scheer, Bailey Overman, Kelly Rose, Ellen Bryan and Kirsten Samples.
