A flock of sandhill cranes stands in a field with some Canada geese Wednesday afternoon near the Montezuma Club Island Wastewater Treatment Plant just north of Guadalupe Road. The wading birds, which can stand up to four feet tall, are migrating south for the winter. Wastewater plant operator Tim Schoen said he saw about 30 of the cranes in the same area on Tuesday.
