12-19-05 Moeller, Flyers get the best of Anna

  Rocket Anna Schulze scored more points, but the Flyers' Maria Moeller came through in the fourth quarter as Marion beat Anna 59-55 in a wild affair. Marion improves to 2-2 with the win.



  Schulze, the multi-sport star and former state cross country champion, led all scorers with 33 points, but it was Moeller's work in the fourth quarter that helped the Flyers come back after trailing 42-41 at the end of three quarters.

  Moeller was 10-of-12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, allowing Marion to outscore Anna 18-13 in the final stanza to pull away. The Ohio State signee led the Flyers with 30 points thanks to a 14-of-16 day from the stripe.

  Schulze was also clutch from the stripe, missing just once in 11 attempts.

  Holly Fortkamp contributed 13 points to the Flyers' cause while Katelyn Mescher added nine.  Anna got help from Marie Hoying, who finished with 11.

  Marion is at Wapakoneta on Tuesday before playing Versailles in a rescheduled game on Thursday at the Hangar.

Cavs suffer first loss

  Coldwater suffered from a slow start in the first quarter against Bath. The Cavaliers dropped their first game of the season via a 53-49 decision against the Wildkittens at the Palace on Saturday.

  The Wildkittens improve to 3-3 with the win.

  Bath led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter and pushed it to 32-22 by halftime. Coldwater made a run at Bath in the second half trailing 44-34 at the end of three before making one last run to get the game to within five points.

  Kendra Robbins paced the Cavaliers with 16 points while Amber Heyne and Tasha Stucke each added nine.

  Alex Dackin led the Wildkittens with 15. Jessica Vorst added 14 with Amy Simindinger chipping in with 12.

  Coldwater faces off with another Western Buckeye Leauge team on Tuesday as the Cavaliers travel to the Elida Fieldhouse to face the Elida Bulldogs.

Indians hold off Patriots

  Fort Recovery outscored Jay County 14-8 in the second quarter to get the lead, then held on for the 52-49 interstate matchup with the Hoosier State rivals from Portland. the Indians go to 4-1 on the season.

  After trailing 15-10 at the end of one, Fort Recovery took a 24-23 lead at the break and pushed it up to 41-36 through three quarters. The Patriots tried to get closer, but the Indians held on.

  Holly Stein led the Indians with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Vicki Roessner added 14 points and dished out seven assists. Tiff Gaerke finished with 11 points and eight boards.

  Sara Garringer led three Patriots in double figures with 13.

  Fort Recovery is at Arcanum on Thursday.

Redskins lose MAC game

  A 20-9 second quarter for St. John's took away St. Henry's first quarter lead as the Blue Jays came back to beat the Redskins 54-39 in a MAC game rescheduled from Thursday due to the weather. St. John's improves to 4-2 and 1-1 with the win as St. Henry falls to 2-3 and 0-2,

  The day spoiled a big game from Redskin Brenda Hemmelgarn, who led all scorers with 20 points. Kayla Lefeld added seven.

  Jeanne Bockey led the Blue Jays with 16.

  St. Henry hosts Celina in a Mercer County matchup on Tuesday.

Slow start hurts Cardinals

  Falling into a 15-4 hole after the first quarter set New Bremen back despite a solid final three quarters, losing to Jackson Center 37-30 at Cardinal Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 2-4 with the loss.

  New Bremen remained down by 11 at the half 25-14 and trailed 31-20 at the end of three quarters before coming back to gain some closeness in the final quarter by outscoring the Tigers 10-6.

  Liz Schnelle had a big day for New Bremen, getting the double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounsd. Christine Schwartz added 10 points.

  Kristi Platfoot led the Tigers with 15 points and nine rebounds with Catie Halberstadt finishing with 12 points.

  New Bremen hosts Fort Loramie on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Redskins stay unbeaten

  St. Henry ran its record to 4-0 with a solid 53-44 win over previously unbeaten Wapakoneta at St. Henry Middle School Gym on Saturday night in a battle of Redskins.

  Leading 12-6 after the first quarter, St. Henry turned things up and led 24-12 at the break. It was 38-26 at the end of three as St. Henry held off a late Wapakoneta charge.

  Kurt Huelsman led St. Henry with 17 points. Toby Boeckman added 14 with Ryan Ranly chipping in eight.

  Josh Brown had the hot hand for Wapakoneta, scoring 16 points. B.J. Reed added 10 points.

  St. Henry is off until Dec. 27 when Kalida hosts the annual non-conference matchup.

Flyers fall to Bulldogs

  Marion had trouble getting out the gate against Elida to suffer its third straight loss to start the season as the Bulldogs came to the Hangar for a 50-33 win. Elida improved to 3-1 on the season.

  Elida led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter and went up 22-15 at the break. Elida outscored Marion 28-18 in the second half.

  Dustin Mathias led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Aaron Thompson added 18 with Kyle Miller chipping in with 11.

  Damon Bertke and Curtis Moeller each had 10 to lead the Flyers.

  The Flyers take a nearly two-week break for the holidays before wrapping up the 2005 portion of the schedule with a trip to Covington on Dec. 30.

Cardinals romp Rockets

  New Bremen jumped out to a 28-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back in beating Anna 70-55 at Cardinals Gymnasium. The win puts the Cardinals at 2-2 on the season.

  Scott Steineman led the way for New Bremen with 24 points. Scott Brackman added 11 as seven other players got at least two points in the game.

  Joel Naseman led the Rockets with 16 points. Kyle Muehlfeld added 15.

  New Bremen is at Allen East on Friday.

Panthers fall to Cougars

  Despite a big game from Mark Snyder, Parkway fell to 1-2 on the season with a 53-44 loss at Panther Gymnasium. The Cougars improve to 3-0 on the season.

  Snyder came up witha season-high 25 points for the Panthers, who led 26-22 at the half before Van Wert outscored Parkway 12-6 in the third quarter and 19-12 in the fourth quarter to get the win.

  Jared Myers led the Cougars with 17 points. Kody Heppeard added 12 points.

Wildcats even record

  Minster dominated the first half to even their record at 2-2 with a 71-43 win over Newton at Wildcat Gymnasium on Saturday. The Indians fall to 3-3.

  Andy Beckman paced the Wildcats with 14 points. Jake Luttmer added 13 with Zac Boeke finishing with 12.

  Minster led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 38-23 at halftime.

  The Wildcats will make up their game with Parkway on Dec. 28.

  Versailles jumped out 17-5 on Twin Valley South to improve to 3-1 on the season with a 54-34 win at Tiger Gymnasium. The Panthers fall to 3-2 on the season.

  Adam Barga paced a balanced scoring night for the Tigers with 14 points. Jordan Liette added 10 as nine Tigers got into the scoring column.

  Versailles hosts Lehman on Friday.
