A formal homecoming was held Sunday for Company A of the 612th Engineer Battalion of the National Guard, based in St. Marys. The unit left town Nov. 13, 2004, and began its service in Iraq in January 2005. The unit arrived back in the U.S. the evening of Dec. 27, 2005, and headed to Camp Atterbury in Indiana for the demobilization process. The unit was allowed to go home for a few days over the New Year's holiday, then went back to Indiana to complete demobilization. The soldiers officially returned home Sunday for the homecoming at Memorial High School, which included a march in front of the school and a presentation by several speakers.
