03-23-06 District 8 honors area players

  The District 8 Basketball Coaches Association announced its all-district teams and selections for the District 8 All-Star Game next week during the awards banquet this past weekend.



  St. Henry's Kurt Huelsman was named the Divisions I-II-III Player of the Year while Marion Local's Maria Moeller earned the girls Division IV Player of the Year award. New Knoxville girls coach Tim Hegemier shared the Division IV Coach of the Year award with Ottoville's Dave Klemen.

  Joining Huelsman on the Divisions I-II-III All District first team was St. Marys' Adam Johns. On the girls I-II-III's list, Coldwater's Kendra Robbins, Celina's Betsy Hone and St. Marys' Kerri Imwalle were named to the second team list.

  In Division IV girls, Moeller was joined by New Knoxville's Nicole Wright on the first team, while Fort Recovery's Tiff Gaerke and Holly Stein, Marion's Jenna Barhorst, New Bremen's Liz Schnelle and St. Henry's Brenda Hemmelgarn earned second team honors.

  The Division IV boys All-District team included New Bremen's Scott Brackman and Scott Steineman on the first team along with New Knoxville's Dustan Kruse. Minster's Andy Beckman and Zac Boeke were named to the second-team.  Celina's Matt Stetler received a Senior Scholarship Award by the District 8 Coaches and former Ottawa-Glandorf coach Dave Sweet was given an Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association Honorary Lifetime Award for his service to the sport.

  Moeller was also named the district's representative at the OHSBCA North-South Game, while Huelsman was named an alternate should Ottoville's Josh Vorst not be able to play in the game.

  The coaches also named the seniors that will play in next week's All-Star Games. The Girls games will be played at the Elida Fieldhouse on March 29.

  St. Marys girls coach Tim Niekamp will guide the West I-II-III team in the first game beginning at 6:30 p.m.. Imwalle will be joined by fellow Roughrider Toya Anderson, Celina's Laura Link and Coldwater's Renee Hemmelgarn and Amber Heyne.

  Playing for the Division IV West team, co-coaches by Hegemeier and Dave Hoffman from Delphos Jefferson and beginning a half-hour after the first game, will be Barhorst, Schnelle, Hemmelgarn, Marion's Holly Fortkamp and New Knoxville's Kara Katterheinrich.

  The boys All-Star Games will be March 30 at Elida. Playing for the I-II-III West Team will be Mike Lefeld of Coldwater, Mark Snyder of Parkway and Toby Boeckman of St. Henry. The I-II-III game will also begin at 6:30 p.m.

  In the Division IV game, New Knoxville's Dan Hegemier will coach the West along with Troy Schwemley of Columbus Grove. Beckman, Brackman and Kruse will be joined by Allan Webster and Brian Schwartz of New Bremen, and Travis Van Skyock of Fort Recovery.

  Admisson to both nights will be $4 for adults and $2 for students.
