08-02-06 Plenty of Mariners dot GLSCL leaderboard

Compiled by Gary R. Rasberry

The regular season ended and the Grand Lake Mariners are well represented on the final Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League leaders list.

Nowhere are the Mariners more well-represented than in the pitching, where Chris Kupillas led four categories. The Central Michigan rightly led the league in earned run average with a paltry 1.47 with a league-leading 52 strikeouts. Kupillas, two times the GLSCL Pitcher of the Week, also led the league in opponents' batting average (.190) and tied for the lead in starts (eight).

Mike Wilson was right behind Kupillas in the strikeout department with 42 and tied for second with five runners picked off during the season.   Kyle Heyne showed himself to be an all-round pitcher during the season. Heyne tied for fourth in the GLSCL with four wins and was sixth in saves with three.

Ryan Kruszke tied for third in the league with 16 appearances on the season with teammate Jeff Loveys tied for fifth with 15 appearances.

Loveys also was one of the leaders in not-so-glamerous statistics, tying for second with eight wild pitches.

On the offensive side, Kevin Cislo spent a lot of time on base this season, ranking second with 22 walks and placing ninth overall in on-base percentage with a .423 clip. Cislo's 24 runs were good for a tie for second in the league.

Dusty Hammond's solid hitting throughout the season resulted in a ninth-place showing in batting with a .320 average and his .430 OBP was good for seventh.

Mike Dury made the leaderboard in a pair of unique departments, tying for fourth by being hit by a pitch seven times. Dury was also the only Mariner to lead an offensive category, although it was in the strikeout department 35 times.

The 35 strikeouts is the third most by a Mariner, with the record of 37 being held by current Coldwater baseball coach Brian Harlamert back in 1991.

The punchout leaderboard had several other Mariners listed as Brooks Hunton was fifth with 29 strikeouts with Quentin Brown fanning 27 times.

Anthony Hayes ranked third in the sacrfice fly department with three.
