10-30-06 Medicine stolen again at Fort Recovery pharmacy

Fort Recovery Police are investigating the second breaking and entering at Kaup Pharmacy, 110 E. Butler St., in less than two weeks.

Authorities responded to the store shortly before 8:30 a.m. Friday after employees arriving for work found someone had broken glass in the front door to gain entry.

Police Chief Jared Laux told The Daily Standard an inventory is under way to pinpoint the exact amount of missing drugs. He added painkillers were among the items taken, but did not elaborate.

"There are few similarities between this incident and the first one on Oct. 17," he added. "I don't want to say a lot at this point because of the ongoing investigation."

Fort Recovery Police continue to work with detectives from the Mercer County Sheriff's Department as well as Union City, Ind., police to apprehend the person or persons responsible for break-ins at Kaup locations in Mercer County and Union City, Ind.  Authorities responded to the Fort Recovery store shortly before 11:30 p.m. Oct. 17 on reports someone had thrown a rock through a glass door in order to gain entry.

Once inside, the perpetrator allegedly took 200 oxycodone tablets in various milligram sizes. The narcotic is commonly used for pain control. A rear door was found ajar, leading investigators to believe this was the escape route.

Officers from the Union City, Ind., Police Department also were called to the scene as they are investigating a break-in around 10:30 the same night.

Entry was gained in similar fashion but the perpetrator did not get painkillers as Indiana law requires they be kept under lock and key.

Anyone who spotted suspicious activity in or near the Fort Recovery store around the time of the incidents should call 419-375-2662.
