Richard Hesse
Richard W. "Dick" Hesse, age 85, of rural Mendon, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017 at Celina Manor.
He was born July 4, 1931 in Mendon, to Harry & Isalena (Davis) Hesse.
On December 27, 1958, Dick married Marilyn Diegel, who survives along with their two Children: Glenna (Bruce) Schmidt of Celina and Galen (Tonya) Hesse of Mendon, five Grandchildren: Bryce and Brock Schmidt and Rachel, Taylor and Ryan Hesse, a Sister-in-law, Melanie Hesse of Celina and a Brother-in-law, Dillon (Beverly) Diegel of Cincinnati.
Preceding him in death were his Parents and a Brother, Max Hesse.
Dick was a 1949 graduate of Mendon-Union High School, and served on the Mendon-Union Alumni Association Committee for several years. A U.S. Army Veteran, he was stationed in the States from 1955-1957. Dick was a farmer, and retired from Huffy Bicycles after many years of service, where he had worked in the welding department.
Dick had owned race horses, and raced at local fairs and various tracks. His horse, "Quetzal" was an outstanding racehorse known in the area. Dick enjoyed attending local fairs. He was a former member of the Mercer County Harness Horsemen's Association.
A Mason since 1958, Dick had been a member of Mendon Masonic Lodge #586, then transferred to Mercer Lodge #121 in St. Marys. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of Dayton.
Dick was known for his great sense of humor. He enjoyed attending his Grandchildren's sporting events and activities. He was a lifelong member of the Hamilton-Bethel United Methodist Church, near Mendon.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 8 at Hamilton-Bethel United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Hamilton-Bethel Cemetery.
Calling Hours are 2-8:00 PM Wednesday, June 7 at W.H. Dick & Sons-Hellwarth Funeral Home in Mendon, and an hour prior to services on Thursday, at the church.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Hamilton-Bethel Church.
