PORTLAND, Ind. - A jury found former Fort Recovery assistant softball coach Shelby Hiestand of Portland guilty of murder Wednesday in Jay County Circuit Court after deliberating for about three hours.
She is the second woman to be convicted of unclassified felony murder in the death of Shea Briar, a 31-year-old from Portland, though her defense team attempted to convince jurors to convict her on lesser charges of reckless homicide or involuntary manslaughter. [More]

Five candidate petitions submitted to the Mercer County Board of Elections for the Nov. 2 general election were rejected this week for either not having enough signatures or because the candidate's signature was missing on certain documents.
The rejected petitions mean some races on the Nov. 3 election ballot will no longer be contested. [More]

COVID-19 cases up significantly
CELINA - Mercer County health district officials on Wednesday encouraged residents to wear a mask in indoor public places as the county's transmission rate and cases of COVID-19 continue to climb.
