The lightning was not the only fireworks at Cavalier Stadium as the Midwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships became a prime time event as delays did not allow for the conclusion until after 11:30 p.m.

The Coldwater girls came away with the team championship, scoring 132 points. Minster was second with 118 with Versailles the only other 100-point team with 101. Rounding out the board were St. Henry (74), Marion Local (67), New Bremen (45), Fort Recovery (42), St. John's (36), New Knoxville (35) and Parkway (11).

On the boys side, defending Division III state champion Marion Local cruised to a win with 133 1/2. Versailles was second with 122 1/2. Coldwater was third with 106 with Minster just missing scoring 100 with 99. St. Henry (62), New Bremen (45 1/2), Parkway (36), St. John's (26), New Knoxville (19 1/2) and Fort Recovery (13) completed the scoring on the night.

Tuesday's stormy weather washed out all of the preliminary heats for the running events except for the girls 100 hurdles, making for a busy Friday afternoon and evening where all the remaining running heats were set up as finals with the top eight finishes earning podium spots.

Seven meet records were broken, with University of Iowa-bound Izzy Zahn claiming three of her own.

The defending Division III state champ in the long jump and 200-meter dash, Zahn started her day by breaking her own record in the long jump, adding 1 3/4 inches to the mark she set last season and winning with a new record of 18-4.

Then came the 400-meter dash, the first of two head-to-head matchups with Fort Recovery speedster Anna Roessner as they both ran the final heat. Zahn dominated, taking over three seconds off the record of 57.7 seconds set in 2007 by St. Henry's Catie Evers to win the race in 54.65 seconds. Roessner's mark of 56.36 also bettered the old mark.

The final battle came in the 200 dash. Zahn trimmed 0.67 seconds off the record she set last season in winning in 23.88 seconds, with Roessner taking second at 24.43, which also bettered the previous record.

In the last race of the night, Coldwater added the final record as Audrey Alig, Kiersten Keller, Ava Lefeld and Lana Kaiser broke the four-minute barrier in the 4x400 relay, finishing in 3:59.77, breaking the old record of 4:01.31 set in 2018 by Minster.

Roessner, though, did not leave empty-handed, setting a record of her own in the 100 dash. Roessner's effort of 12 seconds flat broke the previous mark of 12.19 seconds established last year by St. John's Alex Kessen.

The other two records came from the boys. Coldwater's Johnny Pohlman established a new record in the long jump with a winning effort of 22-4 3/4, 4 3/4 inches farther than the mark set in 1988 by Minster's David Huecker.

The other record came in the 4x100 relay as the St. Henry quartet of Carson Harrod, Zach Heath, Kenseth Hoying and Cole Kaiser beat the mark set last season by Marion Local, finishing in 43.47 seconds.

The Cavalier girls claimed several other wins on the day. Ava Schmitmeyer wrapped up her win in the pole vault, using criteria of fewer attempts to take first over Versailles' Elli Stammen after the duo each finished at 11-6.

Coldwater's Paige Ontrop won the discus on Friday at the MAC track and field meet.

Paige Ontrop took the discus title with a top effort of 109-2, over two feet ahead of runner-up Avery Albers of New Knoxville.

The Cavalier quartet of Brookelyn Sudhoff, Ava Smith, Keller and Claire Bertke took first in the 4x100 relay, winning in 49.81 seconds. Sudhoff, Keller and Bertke earlier teamed with Lana Kaiser to win the 4x200, edging St. Henry with a winning time of 1:47.03.

Marion Local's Grace Moeller (center) swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles titles at the MAC Track and Field Championships on Friday at Coldwater's Cavalier Stadium.

Marion Local's Grace Moeller earned the sweep of the hurdle events, winning the 100 hurdles in 15.17 seconds and coming back later in the day to take the 300 in 46.11 seconds.

Minster, which had won the 4x800 relay on Tuesday, went 1-2 in the 1,600 as Joanna Topp finished in 5:25.18, just 0.44 seconds ahead of teammate Claire Bohman. Maria Niekamp later added the 3,200 title for the Wildcats, finishing in 11:53.51.

On the boys side, both Harrod and Kaiser earned individual wins. Harrod took first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.11 seconds. In the next race, Kaiser dueled with Marion Local's Victor Hoelscher in the 100 dash, with Kaiser winning in 11.08 seconds with Hoelscher second at 11.34 seconds. After a long delay, Kaiser added the 200 to his victory list, edging out Parkway's Trevor Stearns with a time of 22.40 seconds.

St. Henry's Cole Kaiser (center) won both the boys' 100- and 200-meter dashes at the MAC track and field meet in Coldwater.

Hoelscher came up with a win of his own in the 400, taking the victory in 50.14 seconds. The Flyers also won the 4x200 as Andrew Pohlman, Oliver Huelsman, Justin Knouff and Mason Jones won in 1:30.18. Derek Otte used the fewer attempts tiebreaker to win the pole vault after he, Versailles' Kade Schwartz and Coldwater's Carter Glassford tied at 14-0. Schwartz took the nod for second over Glassford.

Versailles' Connor Gibson took first in the 300 hurdles in 40.04 seconds. The Tigers swept the distance races as Tony Moorman pulled away down the stretch to win the 1,600 in 4:29.45, Marcus Briscoe winning the 800, edging New Bremen's Sam Bernhold by 0.12 seconds with a winning time of 1:59.17, then Jackson Spitzer won the 3,200 in 9:35.30. The Tigers wrapped up the evening of racing in taking the 4x400 relay.
