St. Marys City Schools welcomed the public to its newly renovated football stadium 2-7 p.m. Tuesday for an open house. The renovations at Grand Lake Health System Field included the installation of all new turf and a new shock pad, updates to the drainage tile under the turf, the replacement of goalposts that were damaged during a previous wind storm and updates to the field water system, superintendent Bill Ruane said. The shock pad, expected to last over 30 years, added extra safety protection and extended the life of the turf. There were also some additional change orders to repair the concrete walls between the track and field and to repair an area of the track itself. A $650,000 contract was awarded to UDC Sports of North Carolina for the project in December. The board began setting aside money for the project about five to six years ago.
