Steven Powalski
Steven "Smoke" Powalski, beloved father, devoted grandpa, loyal son, and cherished brother-in-law, passed away peacefully surrounded by his daughter Cara and his dog Jackson.
Born February 4, 1958, Steve was the only son of the late Elizabeth Powalski, and carried forward her strength, warmth, and fierce love for family.
Steve was a kind, caring, and patient soul, known for his dark humor and deep capacity to love unconditionally. He had a gift for making people feel at ease, offering laughter when it was needed most and wisdom when the world felt overwhelming. Later in life, he proudly earned his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, proving it's never too late to achieve your goals.
A man of many interests, Steve found joy in photography, reading the Bible, and falling down YouTube rabbit holes late into the night. He had an ear for music, often teaching himself new instruments and sharing that passion with his grandchildren. His hobbies also included firearms, and spending time with his brother-in-law and best friend, Steve Brandon.
He was employed by Huffy Bicycles, Wickey Renovations, Schneider Trucking, and MPA over the years, always bringing dedication and a strong work ethic to everything he did.
Steve is survived by his children: Heather Powalski Rodziewicz (Hobart, IN), Cara Erskine (Oakland, MI), and Steven Powalski Jr. (Cincinnati, OH); and by his beloved grandchildren: Austin Yergler, Caroline Erskine, Corrine Rodziewicz, Harley Powalski, and McKenna Powalski.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Powalski; his aunts and uncles Kate & Frank Powalski, Victor Powalski, John Powalski, Adam Powalski, Lottie Sobecki, Josephine Sauerland; and his nephew, Justin King.
A memorial dinner for close friends and family will be held in Celina, Ohio. His ashes will be spread by his children in Michigan City, a place close to his heart.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter in Steve's memory.
