The Daily Standard staff won first place in the explanatory-enterprise category for several days of coverage of last year's solar eclipse at the Associated Press Media Editor's awards this past Sunday.
The Daily Standard was named the best newspaper in Ohio in its division, winning the award for general excellence at Sunday's annual meeting of the Associated Press Media Editors in Columbus.
It was the third time in five years The Daily Standard has received the top newspaper award.
The staff of the paper took home 12 individual awards, including six first-place honors for work published in 2024.
The staff won first place in the explanatory-enterprise category for several days of coverage of last year's solar eclipse. "This is a delightful package that fully explains science and cultural history around solar eclipses," a judge wrote. (Preparing, Animals, Tourists, Events, Science, The Day)
The staff also won first place for a video of events surrounding the eclipse.
Reporter Abigail Miller won first place for best investigative reporting for her story "What Happened at Holy Rosary?" A judge wrote: "Importantly, (Miller) keeps the focus where it belongs: On the safety of the children."
Reporter William Kincaid won first place for several stories in the best feature writing category. A judge found Kincaid's writing "immersive and engaging." UFOs, Montezuma Mosaic, Moon Tree, Pinball
Jason Snyder and Ryan Snyder won first place in the digital design element category for an interactive historical map.
Reporter Erin Gardner won first place for best business writing for a series of stories about new area businesses. A judge said her stories were "delightful to read." (The Druid's Library, Minster Market, Grains of Love)
The Daily Standard's other winners included:
