Celina's Bria Pearson deflects the ball toward the net for a goal during Monday's soccer match with Greenville at the soccer stadium. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 win over the Green Wave.
CELINA - The sun was not the only thing shining early during Celina's 7-0 win over Greenville on Monday at the soccer stadium.
The Bulldogs were aggressive from the start, and got their breakthrough through freshman Brenna Korte with 28:47 left in the first half. Rachel Rammel doubled the host's lead just eight minutes later after a misplay by the Greenville goalie.
"We worked a lot in the offseason on trying to get people ramped up. We're pretty young, but the freshmen have acclimated pretty quickly," said Celina coach David Hammons.
Celina had a two-goal lead at the halftime whistle, but the scoring did not set with the sun for the home team.
Just under 90 seconds into the second half, Celina got its third goal of the game from senior midfielder Bria Pearson. It was one of the roughly 22 shots that Celina had on target in the game, and the goal created some real breathing room in the second half.
Celina's Jada Highley (9) tries to keep the ball away from Greenville's Haylee Moore.
Junior midfielder Jada Highley broke a near 16 minute goal drought and made it 4-0 Celina with 22:07 left to play. Korte scored her second of the game a minute later to make it 5-0 and the rout was officially on for the Bulldogs at home.
The final two goals were scored in the final 10 minutes of the game, with freshman forward Ali Hemmelgarn adding the sixth for Celina before Rammel found the back of the net for her second goal, Celina's seventh and final of the game.
The win puts Celina at 2-0 to start the year, while outscoring opponents 12-1.
"We all defend together, it starts from the front to the back," Hammons said. "Everybody has a responsibility to make sure they are pressing the ball. They have done a good job of buying into that."
The Bulldogs will try to make it three wins in a row when they take on Ottoville on Thursday in Celina.
Celina's Allana Vondenhuevel (7) goes after the ball during Monday's match with Greenville.
