New Bremen village councilors approved purchasing more than 90 acres of land for $2.8 million west of town.

NEW BREMEN - Councilors on Monday during a special meeting approved purchasing more than 90 acres of land for $2.8 million.

Councilors passed an emergency ordinance to enter into a real estate purchase contract for 90.1 acres from the Greg and Yolanda Schmiesing estate. The land is currently used for agriculture and is located 1 mile west of New Bremen.

Frank Arling of Osgood, an auctioneer with Arling Auctioneers, sold the land to the village for $31,500 per acre, totaling $2,838,150, fiscal officer Amy Speelman said.

Village solicitor Jason This said the village has no immediate plans for the land located at State Route 274 and Tri Township Road in German Township. He cited the reason for the purchase as "investment."

"The land doesn't come available (often) that close to the village," he said.

According to the auctioneering company, the land has 88.8090 acres of tillable ground. The farm has average tiling and is within the school district.

By passing the legislation, councilors also approved amending the 2025 appropriations by the $2.8 million figure, bringing the budget to $26,099,222.26

According to Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, Yolanda, 95, died on Dec. 17, 2024, while Greg died in 1993.

The council meets next at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the village hall.
