St. Marys' Luke Rammel (8) slides into home as New Bremen's AJ Rismiller jumps for the ball during Monday's game. Rammel scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the Roughriders' 4-3 win over the Cardinals.

ST. MARYS - Errors giveth and they taketh away.

New Bremen capitalized on some early St. Marys miscues to build a three-run lead, but the Roughriders plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals Monday evening at K.C. Geiger Park.

"You saw it on both sides. Defensively, we both created some opportunities for each other," New Bremen coach Chad Wells said. "They came up with a big hit, a big play, and credit to them. I liked our early approach. I think we got away from it a little bit. But, it's early in the year, and it's a matter of figuring things out and going from there."

New Bremen jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. With one out AJ Rismiller was hit by a pitch followed by Bennett Tinnerman, who reached on an error.

Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a double off the bat of Brady Pape. A single and another hit batsman loaded the bases before St. Marys starting pitcher Owen Green got out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground out.

The Cardinals threatened another big inning in the third. Eli Cathcart led off by reaching on St. Marys' third error of the game. Following a ground out, Rismiller walked and Tinnerman drove in a run with a single for a 3-0 lead.

Both runners again advanced a base on a wild pitch, but Green got the next two hitters to pop out, escaping further damage.

"Early on they took advantage of our mistakes," St. Marys coach Adam Graves said. "I think all their runs came after we made some errors and gave them extra opportunities. And you can't give anybody extra opportunities."

New Bremen starting pitcher Gavin Quellhorst was dominating early on. He retired the first seven Roughriders he faced. Quellhorst gave up a one-out walk in the third, but then struck out the next two hitters.

"I was really, really pleased with his effort on the mound tonight," Wells said. "He did a great job, gave us an opportunity, and we want to continue to build off of that."

St. Marys got to Quellhorst with a run in the fifth. Jackson Green poked a one-out single up the middle, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.

New Bremen's Brady Pape (12) applies the tag to St. Marys' Caleb Rohrbach.

Pape came on in relief in the sixth and the Riders got rolling with a single by Preston Rupert, followed by Blake Dingledine reaching on an error.

Both runners moved into scoring position on a bunt by Aiden Meinerding. Luke Rammel followed with a sinking single that short-hopped the New Bremen right fielder and rolled all the way to the fence. Two runs scored and Rammel ended up on third, from where he scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center by Jackson Green.

New Bremen's Caleb Keller jumps to avoid St. Marys' Jackson Green during Monday's game.

"Finally there that last couple of innings we were able to get some guys on, take advantage of some opportunities," Graves said. "We started getting balls in play which we weren't able to do those first few innings."

Reese Howell came on in relief of Owen Jackson to get the win. Howell retired six of the seven batters he faced in the final two innings.

Pape suffered the loss in relief for New Bremen. Quellhorst gave up just two hits and struck out eight in his five innings of work.

St. Marys remains unbeaten on the early season improving to 5-0.

"We've shown some glimpses of being capable of being a pretty solid team. We've also shown some instances where we struggle, and I think you saw that today," Graves said. "But we're building some momentum, we've gotten a lot of games in, and I'm hoping this early experience will help us."
