Charles Long
Charles D. Long, 90, formerly of Portland, Ind., of Nov. 1, 2006, at Americare Living Center, Portland, following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 21, 1916, in Tullahoma, Tenn., to William and Vernia A. Poe Long. On Aug. 11, 1937, he married Vivian Bryan, who died Feb. 9, 1989.
Survivors are a son, Harry, Fort Recovery; a brother, Bill, Portland; a sister, Janiece Matchett, Muncie, Ind.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He worked at Sheller Globe Corp., formerly in Portland; was a farmer in Madison Township; and before retirement worked at Bill's Bar, Portland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, and was a 1934 graduate of Madison Township High School. He was a member of the Salamonia United Church of Christ and American Legion Post 211, Portland.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Portland Chapel of Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home, the Rev. Esther Kershaw officiating. Burial will follow at Salamonia Cemetery. The American Legion will conduct military graveside rites.
Calling is 3-7 p.m. today at the chapel.
Contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Unit of Americare Living Center of Portland.
