Lloyd Laut
Former New Bremen resident Lloyd J. Laut, 105, died at 8:50 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008, at Otterbein St. Marys Retirement Community.
He was born Dec. 16, 1902, in New Bremen, to Clarence and Luetta Speckman Laut. On Jan. 17, 1924, he married Esther Hoeper, who died Feb. 23, 1993.
Surviving are six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Deceased are two daughters, Shirley Jane Werling and Joyce Ann Hauck; a brother, Arnold; two sisters, Jeannette Bertke and Lorraine Blanke; and a grandson.
He worked for the former Creamy Patron Printery, the former Leader Printing Company, St. Marys, The Lima News, The New Bremen Sun and the Evening Leader, St. Marys. In He retired from the American Budget Company, in 1968 after serving as president and chairman of the board. He was elected mayor of New Bremen in 1954, and served three successive two-year terms, and two four-year terms on the New Bremen Local Schools Board of Education. A 1920 New Bremen High School graduate, he was a member, past trustee and secretary of St. Paul United Church of Christ, New Bremen. He was the first president of the Mercer-Auglaize County Baseball League, New Bremen, business manager and officer of the Ohio/Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball League, general business manager of the Western Ohio Semi-Pro Baseball League, one of the organizers and members of the New Bremen Rod and Gun Club and the Home Benefit Association of New Bremen.
He also was past president of the New Bremen Parent Teacher Association, a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio, Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton and Antioch Temple, borh of Dayton, Auglaize-Mercer Shrine Club, past trustee of the Mercer County Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge Golf Association, New Bremen Historic Association, past president of the German Township Mausoleum Association and past president and treasurer of the Ohio Consumer Loan Association.
Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home, New Bremen, the Rev. Leah Matthews officiating. Burial is at German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
