Cooling the flames

St. Marys Township Fire Department hosted a controlled training burn just east of St. Marys on U.S. 33A on Saturday. About 55 firefighters from four area departments were on site at some point during the nine-hour burn, supervised by fire instructors from Sinclair Community College in Dayton. This is the second training burn in two years, according to St. Marys Township Fire Chief Chad Hicks, who said the permit process for the homeowner took more than 14 months. "That's why these training houses are so hard to come by," he said. The house, with only the foundation remaining in the picture above, was donated by New Community Church. The barn in the background was not burnt down.
