Bridge work

Workers early this morning pour cement for a "unique and challenging" bridge project in Mercer County, according to engineer Jim Wiechart. Crews from VTF Excavation of Celina are rehabilitating the bridge on county Road 219A in Franklin Township. It lies on a horizontal curve across a small creek with a 3-foot elevation distance from one end to the other. Instead of transporting precast concrete beams to the bridge, workers must cast it on site. The $245,598 bridge project is part of an overall $2 million endeavor, which includes widening five miles of the roadway to the west. Federal grants are paying for 80 percent of the cost; the remainder is being tapped from the county engineer's account.
