Michael "Speaky" Speakman, 67, St. Marys, ultimately defeated cancer on his own terms when he was finally called home at 3:28 p.m. May 27, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family and cat, Phoebe.
He was born Jan. 22, 1946, in Van Wert, to Ralph and Betty Severn Speakman.
On May 20, 1972, in St. Marys, he married Trudy Solomon, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Jon) Kleinhenz Sr. of Troy, two grandchildren, Jack and Josie Kleinhenz; his mother, Betty Weddle of Van Wert; two stepsons, David (Lynn) Freewalt of St. Marys and Mike (Doreen) Freewalt of St. Marys; numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Dan Speakman of Lima; a sister, Deborah Rain of Las Vegas; a half-brother, Jack Speakman of Van Wert; a half-sister, Wanda Hurless of Ohio City; and two brothers-in-law, Bud (Barb) Solomon of Sun Lake, Ariz., and Al (Leslie) Solomon of St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Speakman; a half-brother, Eugene Speakman; and a stepfather, Frank Weddle.
He was a graduate of Van Wert High School and attended Northwestern Business College in Lima. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam era.
He was an agent for Metropolitan Insurance Co., and in his younger years he had worked for Continental Can Co. (Grief Bros.) in Van Wert. He owned and operated "Speaky's Knotty Pine" in St. Marys.
He was a member of Eagles Lodge Aerie #767 in St. Marys, where he enjoyed playing cards with his buddies. He was also a loyal member of Chained Eagles of Ohio, an organization to support and recognize the plight of the POW/MIA soldiers. Since retiring due to disability, "Speaky" worked tirelessly to help those in need find justice and to bring them home.
He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, reading books and drinking coffee at Vogel's Bake Shoppe and McDonald's. He also loved giving advice to his daughter and anyone else who'd listen to him. He had many friends who remained by his side during his struggles and triumphs in life.
