Betty Sampson
Elizabeth "Betty" Sampson, 82, of St. Marys, died at 9:15 p.m. Jan. 31, 2014, at Celina Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 30, 1931, in St. Marys, to Patrick Richard and Stella Fitzpatrick Kelley. She married James H. Sampson on Sept. 30, 1950, and he survives at the residence.
Also surviving are her children, David Sampson, Ruth (Dean) Wale, James (Carla) Sampson, John (Kathy) Sampson, Patrick (Cathy) Sampson and Julie (James) Hollman, all of St. Marys, and Anna (Kevin) Katterhenry, Celina; 16 grandchildren, Brenda (Scott) Howell, Brian (Michelle) Wale, Mike Sampson, Joey Sampson, Amanda (Darren) DeMange, Elizabeth Sampson, Tyler Sampson, Mallory Sampson, Nicholas Fortman, Brooke (Garrett) Gray, Lisa (Charles) Howe, Nick (Sarah Meyer) Katterhenry, Nanette (Keith Lyme) Katterhenry, James Hollman, Matthew Hollman and Jacob Hollman; 10 great-grandchildren, Ben Howell, Brett Howell, Trent Wale, Carter Wale, Lilly Sampson, Kaylee Katterhenry, Ethen Howe, Charley Howe, Alex Lyme and Parker Lyme; and a sister, Ruth Fink, St. Marys.
She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Sampson; sisters, Lucille Bayley, Bernadine Isenberger and Gertrude Riploh; and brothers, Bernard Kelley, Richard Kelley and Edward Frank Kelley.
She was a 1950 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in St. Marys after 32 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, St. Marys, where she was a member of the Altar Society and had been a faithful member of the church choir for 50 years. She had also taught CCD at Holy Rosary Church.
She was an accomplished artist and painted in watercolors, oils and pastels, and she was a member of the Lima Art Club and Association. She had been a Republican Poll volunteer. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. She will be remembered as a very loving mother and as a person who was always willing to help another person. She was very musical and enjoyed sharing her talents with her family and church. Her commitment to Holy Rosary Church was very important to her.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Rev. Barry Stechschulte officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday at Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Celina Manor Activities Fund.
