Alvin Barlage
Alvin Lawrence Barlage, 84, of Wapakoneta, Ohio, formerly of Versailles, OH, died peacefully in his sleep at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2015 at his home. He was born in Shelby County, the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Schlater) Barlage, on June 15, 1931.
Alvin married Rita (Albers) Barlage on Jan. 4, 1964 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 2004. Then on Dec. 30, 2006, he married Mary Margaret (Lusk) Barlage, and she survives.
Also surviving are 6 children, Anthony (Tony) and Kris Barlage, Versailles, OH, Theodore (Ted) and Linda Barlage, Yorkshire, OH, Brenda Barlage, Dayton, OH, Brian and Traci Barlage, Ft. Loramie, OH, Tresa and Joe Zianno, Hamilton, OH and Steven (Steve) and Tricia Barlage, Celina, OH. Five step children also survive, Margaret Maria and Wesley Barnhill, Huber Heights, OH Harold (Hal) Mowery, Lima, OH, Bonita (Bonnie)Lusk Denig, Mason, OH, Amy Beth and Chip Noykos, Minster, OH, and Melissa and Eric Pfenning, Wapakoneta, OH.
Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 16 step-grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 17 step-great grandchildren, and 2 sisters-in-law, Ruth Barlage, Ft. Loramie, and Dorothy Barlage, Minster, OH.
He was also preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters, Leona Barhorst, Richard Barhorst, Mildred (Barhorst) Braun, Evelyn (Barhorst) Mumaw, Erma (Barhorst) Peltier, Dottie (Barhorst) Sloan, Elmer Barhorst, Lester Barlage, Vernon Barlage, Carol Barlage and Dennis Lee Barlage.
Alvin graduated from Ft. Loramie High School in 1949 and attended Columbus Business University. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 8 years. He was a carpenter for Acme Construction Co. and then was employed by Minster Machine in Minster, Ohio. He was a farmer all of his life. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, life member of the K of C Council #1756 in Versailles and Wapakoneta and was a member of the Senior Citizens of Wapakoneta, and the American Legion.
He was member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Newport, Ohio and St. Joseph Church in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was a former parish council member and communion distributor at Newport and Wapakoneta. He was the Volunteer of the Year for the Versailles K of C in 2002-2003.
He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Mon. July 27, 2015, at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Newport, OH, Rev. Steven Shoup officiating.
Burial will follow in the parish cemetery, where military rites will be conducted.
The family will receive friends 2-8 p.m., Sun. and 9-9:30 a.m., Mon. at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home and Cremation Services, St. Rt. 501, Wapakoneta. There will be a prayer service at 8 p.m. for all who would like to come and share their memories of Al with the family and friends.
