Indiana man arrested in Rockford robbery

By Jared Mauch
ROCKFORD - Law enforcement officers arrested one man Wednesday in connection with Monday's armed robbery of the Dollar General store.
John Smead, 49, New Haven, Ind., was arrested during the execution of a search warrant in New Haven by officers from the New Haven and Rockford police departments and the Allen County, Ind., SWAT team, according to a Rockford police news release.
A second male is still at large.
Smead reportedly is being held on a $500,000 bond at the Allen County jail in Indiana and is awaiting extradition to Mercer County.
Rockford Police Chief Paul May III said Smead was an accomplice in carrying out the robbery. He would not elaborate on Smead's suspected role.
Rockford police were assisted by the New Haven and Celina police and the sheriff's offices of Allen and Adams counties in Indiana and Mercer and Van Wert counties, May said.
May thanks the citizens and business owners who provided information that helped lead to the arrest.
Anyone with further information about the second male still at large can call the Rockford police at 419-363-3032, May said.
