D. Joy Sommer
D. Joy (Willis) Sommer age 83 of Minster, Ohio passed away at 3:00 AM Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Elmwood of New Bremen.
She was born on December 23, 1932 in Sydney, Australia to the late Daisy Gay (Gavan Griesmeyer and William T. Willis. She married Maurice V. Sommer from Minster on July 15, 1961 in Dayton, Ohio. He preceded her in death on August 23, 1991.
She was the loving mother of two children: Jeff Sommer, Minster and Jennifer Sommer-Witruk & John Witruk, Elmhurst, IL, 5 grandchildren: Jessica, Austin & Morgan Sommer, Sydney & Greg Witruk.
She was preceded in death by her step-father Robert Griesmeyer and daughter-in-law Maricarol Sommer.
Joy immigrated to Dayton Ohio with her mother in 1945 at the age of 13. She graduated from Stivers High School at the age of 16 and went on to get an AB in Business at Sinclair College in 1951. She then earned an AA in Psychology at Ohio University in 1955. She furthered her education later in life and earned a BASW at Wright State University in 1987 and a MSSW at the University of Kentucky in 1988.
She worked as a personal assistant at General Motors and then devoted herself to raising her family. She eventually went back into the workforce as a social worker at Dorothy Love Retirement Community and at the USAF Medical Center at Wright Patterson AFB.
Joy was very active assisting in the management of West Lake Village Mobile Home Park that she established with her husband and later managed with her son. She was active in the community and was a Welcome Wagon Hostess and belonged to several social groups including the Ft. Loramie Historical Society, stock club, widows group and Wegerzyn Garden Club.
Joy had an effervescent personality that drew people to her and was loved and appreciated by many. She had many hobbies over the years but she especially loved gardening, cooking and traveling. She was also very interested and knowledgeable about nutrition and health and had a passion for Homeopathy.
She most enjoyed spending time with her family and pets. She left them all with a heart full of love and an abundance of life experiences and treasured memories to reflect on in the years ahead.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home Minster with Rev. Rick Nieberding officiating.
Friends may call at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Minster on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM.
