Three suspects ID'd in local explosion

By Sydney Albert
ST. MARYS - Three adult male suspects have been identified and interviewed as part of an ongoing investigation into a reported explosion on South Pear Street.
Police did not release the names of the suspects because they haven't yet been charged but have identified the explosive device as a commercial grade artillery/mortar shell firework.
The device had been placed inside a concrete cinder block to be used as a vessel to propel the device into the air, according to a statement from the St. Marys Police Department. The device ultimately exploded inside the cinder block, causing concrete shrapnel to be expelled in excess of 200 feet.
The investigation is continuing, but the department has determined this was an isolated incident and no threat exists for the public.
In the statement released on Tuesday, the department also thanked the witnesses who had come forward.
