COLDWATER - Coldwater Head Softball Coach Katie Berno's old team was in town on Friday.
And her new team sent Arcadia home with a loss.
Maddie Steinke struck out nine and allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort as the Cavaliers defeated the Redskins 4-2 at Lady Cav Diamond - winning for the first time this week after back-to-back losses in MAC play.
"It was nice to bounce back after last night," Berno said. "The girls came out and did what they needed to do. Overall, they played pretty well. They hit the ball hard. It's a good win to get going into tournament."
Coldwater improved to 9-11. Arcadia, which had a 1 1/2-hour bus ride to Coldwater, fell to 9-8.
"It's a good group of girls over there," Berno said of Arcadia. "I know quite a few of them. I wish them the best."
The Redskins struck early with a pair of first-inning runs. Leadoff hitter Breana Reinhart drew a walk and Samantha Burnett reached on an error. Lanei Rodriguez plated one with a sacrifice fly and Lenci Rodriguez followed with an RBI single.
The Cavs got back one run in the first inning thanks to three hits. Audrey Ziegler's single scored Molly Steinke, who got herself a base hit earlier in the frame.
Coldwater overtook Arcadia for good in its next at-bat. Leanne Klenke led with a single, stole second, went to third on a single by Grace Stammen and scored on a passed ball. Stammen later scored on a single by Kate Leichty, her second hit of the night.
Arcadia threatened in the fifth, putting runners on the corners with one out. But Maddie Steinke struck out the next batter and then picked off a runner on a delayed double-steal attempt.
Coldwater tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Stammen started the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by Molly Steinke. Stammen scored on a fielder's choice by Maddie Steinke, who pitched 1-2-3 innings in the final two Arcadia at-bats.
"Maddie always does her job," Berno said. "You can always count on her. She's going to throw strikes. She's going to do what she's got to do. And tonight, the people behind her stepped up."
Stammen, Leichty and Molly Steinke all had two hits. Maddie Steinke added a triple.
The Cavs host Versailles in a makeup conference game today at noon. Fort Recovery is in Coldwater for a MAC game on Monday before the Cavs open Division III tournament play on Tuesday at home with Liberty-Benton.
