Jennie 'Jane' Hertel
Jennie (Jane) Louise Hertel passed away peacefully on December 24, 2020 at age 101 at Northcare Hospice House in Kansas City, MO.
She was born on September 24, 1919 in Elgin, Ohio to Victor and Effie Mae (Hughes) VanEman. She graduated from York Township High School in 1937 and then worked as a secretary in Lima, Ohio for Westinghouse Electric Corporation.
On December 24, 1944 she married Dale Hertel in Texas where Dale was stationed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. After military service, they returned to Ohio to begin their farming career in Ohio City and then Lima. In 1954 they moved to Celina to expand their farming business.
They were active members of Bethany United Methodist church where Jane was involved in various women's ministries. They shared many travel adventures throughout the world in their later years as a result of Dale's involvement in the SuperCrost Seed company. They shared 54 years of marriage before Dale passed away in 1999.
In 2000, Jane moved to Kansas City, Missouri to be closer to family. During the next 21 years Jane was active at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church and the North Kansas City School District's Senior programs. She enjoyed trips with her daughter and family weddings. She especially enjoyed holidays and birthdays with her nine great-grandchildren in the area. Family from the East Coast visited often and celebrated milestone birthdays with her.
Jane was a loving and devoted wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her five adult granddaughters remember summer vacations to the Ohio farm and fun tea parties, playing "dressup", and endless hours of Uno and Monopoly. Her great-grandchildren lovingly called her "Nana Jane." Jane's strong Christian faith and testimony were evident to all that knew her.
Jane's brother, David VanEman, preceded her in death. She is survived by daughter Dianne (Ron) Covell of Kansas City, MO and son J Douglas (Carol) Hertel of Springfield, VA. Also surviving are granddaughters Allison (Greg) Dull and Ashley Vaughn of Kansas City, MO; Meredith (Christian) Antonelli and Robin Hertel of Richmond, VA; Beth Hertel of Austin, TX; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family is deeply grateful for the care Jane received at Anthology of Burlington Creek and from her Northcare Hospice team - especially Christy, Katie, Ralph, and Herbert.
Due to COVID, private services will be held in Kansas City, MO on December 31 at Souder Funeral Home, interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Ohio City, OH, with a family memorial in Ohio to be held later.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 416 E. Wayne St., Celina, OH 45822 or KC Hospice, 1500 Meadow Lake Parkway, Ste 200, Kansas City, MO 64114. Please specify your gift is in memory of Jane Hertel.
