Mary Ann Will
Mary Ann Will passed from this earth, peacefully and surrounded by family and friends on June 12, 2023.
She recently celebrated her 90th birthday, on May 3, at the Dorothy Love residence in Sidney, Ohio, where she has resided since late spring 2017. She made many friends in this new bright, cheerful community and we want to thank all of the wonderful caregivers at Dorothy Love, and especially, Dodie New, who served as her personal caregiver, family communicator and friend. Mary Ann may well be best remembered for her gorgeous ginger red hair and her sparkling laughter. And equally for her profound love for her two brothers, Ted Will (Mary Margaret), Tom Will (Sandy deceased), her many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and nephews and cousins with whom she maintained close relationships, and her dear friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Minster, including her best friend since childhood, Peggy Bensman.
Her curiosity and her thirst for learning drove much of her early professional decisions. After attending St. Mary's Notre Dame for one year, and finishing her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing at Our Lady of Cincinnati, she taught nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital in Chicago for several years and became friends with a quite famous neighbor over their mutual love of dogs, Marie Tallchief, considered America's first prima ballerina, then retired in Chicago. Tallchief's Native American heritage may have influenced Mary Ann's next decision to move to Los Angeles where she taught nursing to students from the Navajo reservation and took up tennis. Missing the Midwest, Mary Ann returned to her home state, earned a Master's in Child Psychology from Wright State University, and she worked in both the Cleveland and Toledo School Districts until her retirement.
The school calendar gave Mary Ann time to travel which she embraced fully with many destinations identified through her dedicated reading of monthly National Geographic magazines. Mary Ann saw the pyramids of Egypt and rode a camel sporting curls from a home hair perm given to her by her 13-old-niece. She saw polar bears in the Hudson Bay and brought home stuffed animal bears for Christmas presents for all her grandnieces and nephews, and she traveled to Antarctica, taking along a niece, and her engaging conversation skills and curiosity in her fellow travelers, and world events, earned her many invitations to the captain's table for dinner.     She was an avid reader and encouraged reading in her family, always asking what books we had recently finished, and sending gifts of monthly reading subscriptions to family. She also loved visiting Fond du Lac, Wisconsin (home of her brother, Tom) and Bemidji, Minnesota (home of her brother, Ted) where she enjoyed fishing, swimming, and boating. Tom and Ted will be forever grateful for the loving care Mary Ann gave to their mother in her waning years. We will also remember Mary Ann for her deep love for Minster, St. Augustine's Church and her days as a snare drummer in the Minster Wildcats Marching Band, her unwavering love for dogs, everyone's dogs, and especially for her Labrador, Molly, her bright pink flowered swimming cap, her love for Klondike ice cream bars and her parents, Ted and Margaret (Byrne) Will, and uncles, Rev. John and Jim Byrne.
Funeral Mass will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 48 N. Hanover Street, Minster, Ohio, 45865.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m.
Memorials encourage to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind, which provides guide dogs to people with vision loss.
