Fort alum Thwaits retires

Fort Recovery graduate Nick Thwaits announced his retirement on Wednesday after 4 ½ seasons in the San Diego Padres minor league system.

A 15th round selection of the Padres in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, Thwaits started the 2023 season with Fort Wayne in the High-A Midwest League before he was sent to Class A Lake Elsinore in the California League on June 27. Thwaits last pitched for the Storm on Aug. 12, pitching 3 1/3 innings in relief before formally going on the voluntary retired list on Wednesday.

Thwaits appeared in 109 games in his career, going 12-20 with a 4.74 ERA in 294 innings and striking out 279 batters.

GIRLS SOCCER

Celina 5, Greenville 1

Rachel Rammel posted a hat trick and Celina outshot Greenville 43-1 to give the Bulldogs a win over the Green Wave at the soccer stadium.

Rammel raised her season goal total to five after getting two goals on Tuesday night against Ottoville.

Kenlie Holstad and Natalie Zimmerman each scored their first of the year in the victory for Celina (2-0-0).

Jayda Lyons scored the lone goal for the Green Wave (0-2-1).

Celina is back in action on Saturday as the varsity team hosts Bryan at 1 p.m. The Celina JV will play Anna first at 11 a.m.

Coldwater 3, Fort Jennings 0

Ellie Schneider had two goals and Sydney Grieshop recorded her first clean sheet of the season as the Cavaliers opened the season with the win over the Musketeers in Fort Jennings.

Schneider scored her goals off assists from Avery Knapke and Grace Huwer in the first half. Leah Kaiser added a goal off a penalty kick in the second half.

Grieshop needed only to make two saves on the night to get the shutout.

BOYS SOCCER

St. Marys 1, Liberty-Benton 0

Bradey Triplett's goal with 11:41 remaining held up to give the Roughriders their second straight win to open the season.

St. Marys returns to action next Thursday when Troy comes to Roughrider Field.

BOYS GOLF

St. Henry 173, Marion Local 181

Josh Rindler was low man of the round with a 41 as the Redskins picked up the MAC win over the Flyers at the Mercer County Elks.

Ty Post carded a 42 with Jack Buschur shooting a 43 and Zach Rindler a 46.

Marcus Rethman led Marion Local with a 43. Adam Schwieterman added a 45, Austin Niekamp finished with a 46 and Grant Kremer carded a 47.

Minster 164, Parkway 186

Bryce Prenger medaled with a 37 to lead the Wildcats to a MAC win over the Panthers at Celina Lynx.

Jack Meyer and Louis Magoto each shot a 40 for Minster and Tyler Stueve finished with a 47.

Rylan Lyons' 42 led Parkway. Mason Schumm shot a 43 and Evan Kimmel added a 49 for Parkway.

Coldwater 165, New Knoxville 241

Ben Giere posted a medalist round of 37 to give Coldwater its second MAC win of the season in beating the Rangers at Arrowhead.

Tyler Overman and Braxton Howell each added a 42 and Landon Knapke carded a 44.

John Gabel led New Knoxville with a 47. Colton Gabel added a 59.

Fort Recovery 170, Versailles 192

Eli Lennartz broke 40 with a 39 to earn medalist honors and give the Indians the win over the Tigers at Portland Golf Course.

Nate Jutte shot a 42, Matt Romer carded a 44 and Reece LeFevre and Alex Dues each added 45s to go with Keegan Muhlenkamp's 46.

Brayden Wagner and Gabe White paced Versailles with matching 42s.

Bath 151, St. Marys 171

Connor Raines led the Wildcats with a medalist round of 36 to lead Bath to a WBL win over the Roughriders at Northmoor. Bath is coached by Celina graduate Sean Boley.

Braden Binkley added a 37 and Ethan Clayton and Ezra Bolon each shot a 39 for the Wildcats.

Braylon Lampert led St. Marys with a 41. Brennan Steger shot a 42 and Kadin Behr and Joel Kogge each carded a 44.

GIRLS GOLF

Minster 205, Parkway 212

The Wildcats moved to 3-0 in the MAC with the close win over the Panthers at Arrowhead.

Lauren Heitkamp led Minster with a 47 to earn medalist honors. Ashlyn Homan carded a 48 and Ashley Meyer and Star Weigandt each shot a 55.

Sarah Sheppard paced Parkway with a 49. Madison Louth shot a 50 with Shay Boroff and Addison Leighner finishing at 54 and 59, respectively.

Marion Local 229, St. Henry 235

Anna Hemmelgarn's medalist round of 53 paced the Flyers past the Redskins at the Elks.

Emma Smith finished with a 56 for Marion with Grace Brunswick shooting a 58 and Haley Everman carding a 62.

Grace Beyke led St. Henry with a 54.

Versailles 205, Fort Recovery 228

The Tigers got a medalist round of 41 from Ella Porter to pick up the MAC win over the Indians at Stillwater.
