Demolition of Minster's press box, bleachers starts this week

The bleachers and press box at Minster's Memorial Stadium will be demolished and replaced inflame for the football season. The Minster High School Memorial Invitational track meet was the last event held with the old facilities.

MINSTER- School board members approved a $170,224 agreement for the demolition of the old bleachers and press box at Memorial Stadium during Monday night's meeting.

Board members approved the guaranteed maximum proposal of $170,224 from Baumer Construction of Minster for the demolition portion of the Memorial Stadium bleacher and press box project. The last event hosted by the school with the old facilities was the Minster High School Memorial Invitational track meet on Saturday.

Superintendent Josh Meyer said the demolition is expected to begin this week, weather permitting.

The demolition will clear the way for the construction of a new press box and installation of new bleachers. The board awarded a $1.25 million contract to the Southern Bleacher Co. of Graham, Texas, to replace the old press box and bleachers, which date back to the construction of the stadium in 1976.

The project is expected to be completed by August before the start of the new football season.

Board members remained in executive session at the newspaper's deadline discussing the contracts of Meyer, high school principal Austin Kaylor and elementary principal Amanda Albers. Also under discussion during the session were raises for administrative employees and the possible sale or purchase of property.

In other personnel matters handled in open session, the board granted one-year contracts to high school English teacher/librarian Elizabeth Hinker and cook's helper Lindsey Kemper. Edna Sanchez was hired as summer school tutor.

Board members also,

• granted one-year contracts for 2024-25 to football coaches Seth Whiting, head coach; William Smith, Craig Lehmkuhl, Brian Sextro and Seth Harmeyer, assistant high school; and Jason Lammers and Harmeyer, junior high; volleyball coaches Chelsea McGhee, head coach; Caileigh Huelskamp, junior varsity; and Julie Woehrmyer, junior high; cross country coaches Jessie Magoto, head girls coach; Seth Stammen, junior high boys; and Greg Zumberger, junior high girls; and head girls golf coach Deb Ahrns.

• approved a resolution of necessity for Meyer to obtain quotes to replace old cast iron pipes in portions of the high school building.

• heard a presentation by sixth-grade teacher Emily Hemmelgarn about a nonprofit education organization to assist schools in obtaining quality learning materials for schools. The organization evaluates the quality of various materials on the market.

• heard Kaylor report that 69 seniors are projected to complete state and local requirements for graduation. Commencement is set for May 26. He also noted the symphonic band has qualified for the April 27 state contest and congratulated senior Maggie Hemmelgarn and teacher Jessie Magoto as the district's representatives at the recent Franklin Walter Banquet.

• recognized Owen Bergman, Jamies Boehnlein, Fletcher Luthman, Kaleb Sharp, Keetan Sharp and Leanne Wendeln for earning FFA state degrees.

• learned from Albers that 78 children participated in the kindergarten screening.

• accepted the donation of a metal trailer frame from Joanne Mangen for the vocational agriculture department, 30 ukuleles valued at about $3,000 from the Kala Brand Music Co. and $1,500 from Area Electric for the FFA program.

• approved the second reading of revised district policies.
