Area teams play at Ruschau Classic

New Bremen hosted the 10th annual Mark Ruschau Volleyball Classic on Friday. The tournament, named in tribute to the longtime Daily Standard sportswriter, brought together 18 schools, including St. Henry, Minster, New Knoxville and St. Marys along with host New Bremen, in round-robin play with the top teams moving on to Gold and Silver Bracket finals. Versailles won the Gold Bracket championship, defeating Minster in the quarterfinals and Ottawa-Glandorf in the semifinals before defeating St. Henry in the championship match. St. Henry defeated Anna and New Bremen to reach the final. Carey defeated Old Fort to win the Silver Bracket final. August 1 is the first official day of practice with the season getting underway Aug. 15.
