Urban was a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served proudly at Fort Benning, Georgia, as a medic and an ambulance driver during paratroop training for Airborne units. He had many stories to tell about his time served and loved to share those stories with his family.
Urban retired from Avco New Idea Co. in Coldwater in 1997 after 43 years. He also farmed and loved the land he tilled. In addition, he sold life insurance for many years. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in North Star since 1962. He was also a member of the Osgood American Legion Post #588 since 1953. With the American Legion, he served as Post #588 Commander for 4 terms, Department of Ohio Asst-Sergent-at-Arms, 3rd District Asst-Sergeant-at-Arms, 3rd District Sergeant-at-Arms, Ohio 3rd District Finance Officer, Ohio 3rd District 2nd Vice Commander, Ohio 3rd District 1st Vice Commander, Ohio 3rd District Commander, and Darke County Commander. He served with the Darke County Veterans Service Committee and volunteered at the Darke County fair. He was active in Buckeye Boys' State serving as Trustee for many years. Urban was a dedicated and loyal Legion member and attended monthly meetings into his 90s.
Urban was an avid Versailles Tigers fan. He loved to listen to the football games on the radio when he couldn't attend the games. We all knew his passion for playing cards. He was always ready to play all night if you were willing! Urban enjoyed traveling with the family when the kids were young to an amusement park, Fantasy Farm, each summer and with Irma to the Legion Conventions that were held annually. He enjoyed, most of all, the time spent with his family. He and Irma always cherished the many large family gatherings and watching the family grow. During one family vacation in 2000 in Oak Island, NC, a gentleman asked if he was responsible for all these people! He proudly said "yes, I guess so."
The family is very grateful for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Urban and his family by the staff at Briarwood Village in Coldwater and the wonderful nurses and aides and staff with EverHeart Hospice. We are also grateful for the caregivers that came to the house for three years to assist in his and Irma's care before moving to Briarwood.
