A combine harvests soybeans off Now Road south of Rockford. The local harvest season is underway after farmers saw a wet August. Though Mercer County ag educator Ryan McMichael didn't have numbers, he said southern Mercer County is progressing further than the northern half as farmers have had to wait for the fields to dry out. That trend reflects planting season, as southern Mercer County started a tad earlier, though the rain didn't delay the season. Producers shared with him that they've been "pleasantly surprised" with some of the yields. Auglaize County extension educator Jacob Winters said harvesting soybean and corn for grain is in its early phase. McMichael said farmers and producers are trying to get in as much as they can before the scheduled rain next week. He advised drivers to be more aware on the road amid the increased farm equipment.
