ST. MARYS - Not only was St. Marys able to beat the nasty weather, they beat their cross-lake rival.
The Roughriders improved to 2-0 in Western Buckeye League boys tennis play with a clean sweep 5-0 win over Celina on Tuesday at the Minster Bank Courts at Memorial High School. The Bulldogs drop to 2-2 in league play.
St. Marys took four of the five matches in straight sets, with the second doubles going the full three seats as inclement weather held off long enough to complete play.
The three Roughrider singles players dropped just seven games. Jake Ackroyd was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Josh Schoen in first singles. Noah White had a battle in second singles against Jon Avers, winning a tough 6-4, 6-2 decision. Bradey Triplett completed the singles sweep in third singles, beating Nick Johnson 6-1, 6-0.

"Very good play from all of our singles players today," said St. Marys assistant coach Cody Birt. "Jake and Bradey almost had clean sweeps. Noah was battling a quad injury, his match took a little longer because of it, but he got the job done."
The big battle of the day came in second doubles. St. Marys' Trent Ruane and Lincoln James took the opening set 6-3 before Celina's Caison Hall and Logan Sapp came back to take set two 6-2 to send the match to the third set. It went back and forth before Ruane and James took the win 6-4 to take the match.
"Good match. Celina players are very good, but so are our guys," said Birt. "They got the grit and determination to play long matches."
The first doubles match was a little more put away as Ollie Chisholm and Korey Klosterman were 6-3, 6-2 winners over Celina's Austin Siefring and Carson Weitzel.
"Couldn't be more proud of them," Birt said of first doubles. "They finish up pretty quick."
"It was definitely a hard one. (We knew that) coming in," said Celina coach Kayliann Howell. "They played well. We had some long matches overall. Happy with how they played."
St. Marys returns to action Thursday when Kenton comes to town for a WBL match. Celina is on the courts again today for a non-conference home match with Bluffton.
