Wind storm blasts area

Widespread power outages, downed trees and structural damage were reported throughout Mercer and Auglaize counties on Friday after winds estimated at 80 mph ripped through the area. Winds leveled tents for this weekend's Freedom Days and brought down several large trees at the Mercer County Fairground. One tree struck several vehicles and campers. Large sections of the roof above the fairgrounds' grandstand were also ripped off. No serious injuries were reported. Freedom Days' planners hope to get things up and going by noon Saturday. Friday's activities at the community picnic in St. Henry were derailed when several tents were blown down, but the festivities should go on Saturday and Sunday. A large section of the roof of the state garage on state Route 29 west of Celina peeled off.
