Inventive minds

Judge Leroy Peters, a local retired engineer, listens to Jared Post, at left, and Adam Buening explain their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) invention during the annual STEM Fair at St. Henry Middle School on Wednesday. The seventh-graders designed a child's shirt with a back pocket for tissue access. The boys, and their other partner, Zack Stammen, titled their invention "Snot your ordinary shirt." Students begin working on inventions in November when they break off into teams and develop ideas to present at the annual Fair. During the year, they bring in photos of their projects, perform tests and have others do the same before making final improvements. They must give presentations to the class, as well as the judges. This year there were 39 projects. Judges included 17 engineers from area companies and four high school students from Fort Recovery Local Schools' Project Lead the Way program. The STEM Fair is organized by teacher Monica Wehrley.
