Josephine Bruns
Josephine Mary Bruns, 89, Yorkshire, died Feb. 7, 2011, in Newark.
She was born March 26, 1921, to Anton and Sophia Holscher Wenning. On June 25, 1947, she married Harold J. Bruns, who died Oct. 3, 1973.
Surviving are five children, M. Joanne (Ron) Sherwood, Granville, Susan (Thomas) Moffitt, Hamilton, Margaret Seng, Bladensburg, Sharon (Joseph) Henry, Versailles and Nicholas (Jane) Bruns, Hickory Corners, Mich.; three siblings, Theresa Alexander, Russia, Cletus (Lois) Wenning, Osgood, and Leo (Marguerite) Wenning, Yorkshire; a brother-in-law, Hugo (Betty) Schlarman, Osgood; a sister-in-law, Francis Wenning; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Also deceased are four siblings, Henry Wenning, Martha Wenning, Rita (Leo) Bollheimer and Elizabeth Schlarman; and a brother-in-law, Firmin Alexander.
She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Osgood. She graduated from Versailles High School in 1939. She graduated as valedictorian with an RN license from St. Elizabeth's Hospital School of Nursing in Dayton. She also graduated with a bachelor's of science in nursing education from Catholic University of America. She cared for polio patients in Washington, D.C., and obtained education credits from Miami University in Oxford for an elementary education certificate. She taught nursing at St. Elizabeth's Hospital School of Nursing and worked at Sidney Memorial Hospital as a nurse. She taught at St. Denis Catholic School in Versailles, and was the school nurse at Versailles Exempted Village Schools. She worked for the Darke County Health Department. She was inducted into the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in May 1995. She was a leader and founder of the Patterson Patchers 4-H Club. She was a founding member and volunteer for the Osgood Life Squad, a former president and member of the American Legion Post 588 Ladies Auxiliary and former president and member of the church's Ladies Sodality.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, the Rev. David Zink officiating. Burial is at St. Martin Cemetery in Osgood.
Calling is 4-7 p.m. Thursday and 9-10 a.m. Friday at Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Minster.
