Nancy Reed
Nancy Kay Reed, 83, of Lake Placid, Florida, formerly of Newark, Ohio, passed away peacefully in the company of family at AdventHealth Sebring on September 6, 2024.
She was born on March 2, 1941, in Athens, Ohio.
Nancy was a 1959 graduate of Highland High School in Medina, Ohio. She received her BA in English and Spanish from Ohio Northern University in 1963, and an MA in High School Administration from The Ohio State University. She was a Spanish teacher at Hastings Middle School in Upper Arlington, Ohio prior to dedicating herself to marriage and motherhood.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who was best known for her faith, philanthropy, and love of entertaining family and friends. Nancy loved a good book, golden retrievers, lilies of the valley, and helping others in need. She enjoyed traveling and had many fond memories, particularly of spending time at Lakeside, Ohio.
Her dedication to community service was unwavering, leading to a long list of accomplishments and volunteer work. Most recently, she was an active member of P.E.O. Chapter IA/FL, The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Patriots Chapter, The GFWC Lake Placid Women's Club, ESO Book Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid. She was also a faithful volunteer at Nu-Hope of Highland County. While in Newark, she was a long-time member of the 20th Century Club whose mission is to support the children of Camp O'Bannon, as well as the First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter DL/OH, Monday Talks, and The Progressive Club. Nancy was honored with the prestigious Rotary Service Above Self Award in 2006, a fitting recognition for her selfless contributions.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, Dr. Nicholas E. Reed. They were married in 1965 and renewed their wedding vows at Ohio Northern University in 2023.
She is also survived by her three sons of whom she was incredibly proud: Dr. Shawn L. Reed of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; Dr. Todd Joseph (Pei-Lin) Reed of Concord, Massachusetts; and Brian C. (Shani) Reed, Esq., of St. Louisville, Ohio, as well as her grandchildren, Mei and Lian Reed of Concord. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother R. Lawrence Richey of Akron, Ohio.
In accordance with her wishes, Nancy will be cremated, and a private memorial service will follow at a later date.
Memorial Contributions can be made to any of the aforementioned organizations or to the R. Lawrence Richey Endowed Scholarship Fund for Pharmacy at Ohio Northern University.
