Work started Monday to extend council chambers by knocking down the back wall, adding 9 feet to the space.
NEW BREMEN - The New Bremen Village Council on Monday heard first reading of an ordinance to allow a pipeline easement with the village's gas company.
The easement allows Vectern Energy Delivery of Ohio, doing business as CenterPoint Energy, to cross the village-owned canal.
"They're replacing steel high-pressure gas lines with plastic," village administrator Brent Richter said during the regular council meeting. "It gives them the right to put a pipe under the ground on our property, south of the electric car chargers by the library."
Vectern has been owned by Houston based-CenterPoint Energy since 2019.
In other business, councilors heard work started Monday to extend and upgrade council chambers.
Crews knocked down the wall that the old EMS office shared with the current chamber room. The project will expand guest seating and open the area by adding 9 feet. Riethman Builders, Minster, will do the construction work for $35,000. Four-U Office, Celina, will upgrade the furniture for $28,000.
As of Monday, Richter was unsure when the project will be finished.
Councilors also:
• approved third and final reading of an ordinance to amend the zoning map at Plum and Walnut streets.
Richter said on May 27 that the planning commission met to discuss rezoning the four parcels of land where the old school was at Plum and Walnut streets from R1, single-family homes to R2, multifamily housing. Their recommendation was to rezone.
The ordinance was to accept the commission's recommendation. Richter said there are no immediate plans for the space.

The council meets next at 6:30 p.m. July 13 at the village hall.
